Faced with increasing competition for film and TV show production, BC hopes to remain in the industry’s spotlight with more generous tax incentives.
The province plans to increase the Film Incentive BC tax credit for Canadian productions, and the production services tax credit for international films and TV shows made in BC.
Premier David Eby says the busy film production sector in the province has taken a big hit over the last few years from the pandemic, labour disruptions and changes to industry practices.
He says boosting tax incentives, along with our competitive advantage, should ensure BC continues to be a destination of choice for filmmakers.
Based on feedback from animated productions, BC will also restore regional and distant location tax credits for companies with a bricks-and-mortar presence outside of Metro Vancouver, the Fraser Valley and Whistler and Squamish.
Studio executives on Los Angeles have told the provincial government these change could bring significant increases in productions.
Foreign productions make up more than 80 per cent of the total spent of making movie and TV shows in the province.
