Residents in the Comox Valley looking for a new job will have the chance to earn one through a training program.
Partnering with the Recreation Facilities Association of British Columbia (RFABC), the town will host the Building Service Worker (BSW) level one course.
The course will serve as an entry point for people into the industry, with incentives such as interview opportunities and a reimbursement program.
Comox’s Recreation Director Ted Hagmeier said they are in need of staff, but too many applicants are turned away due to not having BSW certification.
“By hosting this course locally and offering incentives, we’re making it easier for people to get the training they need to join our team. It is a win-win for the Town and for participants looking to secure employment.”
Participants who do well and demonstrate enthusiasm may be offered an interview for a casual position with the Town of Comox upon completion of the course.
Anyone hired within six months of completing the course and working at least 100 hours within a year of employment will be reimbursed 25 per cent of the course’s cost.
RFABC’s Executive Director Dwyane Kalynchuk said the course is a ticket to a range of opportunities in recreation facilities and more.
“We’re excited to team up with the Town of Comox to make this course easy to access and help people build the skills they need to land jobs close to home.”
The course runs from 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday March 8 and 9 with the cost being $450 per person.
