Southern Vancouver Island and the Sunshine Coast were shaken by an earthquake just after 5 a.m.
U.S. Geological Survey says the magnitude 4.5 quake happened at 5:02 a.m. PST and was centered in the San Juan Islands.
Earthquakes Canada says it was 45 kilometres northeast of Victoria and by 6 a.m. more than 1,500 people reported feeling it in Victoria, Duncan, Nanaimo, the Sunshine Coast, and Vancouver.
The quake was felt as far north as Courtenay and Powell River.

There are no reports of damage and the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre has not issued a tsunami advisory or alert.
