Town to review land acquisition service

Town of Comox staff will review a local service over expansion concerns.

The Town is reviewing the Comox Valley Regional District’s emergency shelter and Service 450, which supports land acquisition only for the purpose of shelter and supportive housing.

They say the review is over concerns on the service’s scope is expanding, which comes after the district board recently approved the expansion as part of building a Housing Corporation.

Mayor Nicole Minions says given the economic pressures they are facing, the Town believes the scope has changed from what was agreed upon back in 2009.

“As a result, the Town has chosen to continue funding these types of initiatives locally,” said Minions.

“While we acknowledge the importance of the work the CVRD aims to accomplish, the Town remains committed to supporting affordable housing initiatives in the Comox Valley through the continuation of direct contributions.”

They say the review would assess the efficiency, cost, and delivery of the service, leading to either changes or even withdrawing from it.

The review was approved by Town council at the January 15 council meeting.
