K’omoks treaty and constitution to be ratified Saturday

A treaty and constitution for K’omoks First Nation will be ratified this weekend.

The nation has completed negotiations for both items, with the treaty to recognize their aboriginal rights and title and inherent right to self-government once ratified.

They say this announcement comes after over two decades of treaty negotiations.

“There are six stages in the BC treaty process. On March 24, 2012, K’ómoks signed the Agreement in Principle (Stage 4) with British Columbia and Canada and entered into Stage 5 negotiations,” said the nation.

“Ratifying the Constitution and Treaty on March 8, 2025, is part of this important process.”

Along with self-governance, the treaty would also reconcile differences over lands and resource ownership, commit to capacity building, and improving economic opportunities for the nation.

The treaty and constitution will be voted on by the members and community in the K’omoks administration building at 3330 Comox Road.

Voting runs from noon to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday.
