In a statement, the Comox Valley Regional District says the City of Courtenay, Town of Comox, and Village of Cumberland recognize the significance of this achievement, adding the vote marks a significant milestone in the treaty process.
District Board Chair Will Cole-Hamilton says on behalf of the local governments, they congratulate the nation for this decision.
“We commend the dedication and leadership of the K’ómoks Treaty Team, K’ómoks Council, Hereditary Chiefs, Elders, past Chief Councillors and all others who contributed to this enormous effort and result,” said Cole-Hamilton.
“We eagerly anticipate the positive opportunities this treaty will bring to the entire region. This work will impact generations of K’ómoks people, and we stand with the Nation as they embark on this exciting new path.”
The district says while the ratification process will continue for several more years, the local governments aim to support the nation’s transition to self-government.
