New initiative aims to help local businesses and lower waste

To help small businesses, the City of Courtenay has announced a new month-long initiative.

Called Bring Your Own Cup, it aims to lower single-use items by getting people to bring reusable cups whenever they buy a drink from a local coffee shop.

Along with supporting local businesses, the city says it also looks to lower waste as 1.5 billion single-use cups are thrown away annually, contributing to over 400 million tonnes of waste each year.

They say for this initiative, shops like Bigfoot Donuts, Blue Spruce Ice Cream, Frankie Jo’s Bakery Café, Freyja – The Croissant Story, Hot Chocolates, Mignon & Kie Café and Eatery, Mudsharks Coffee Bar and The Twisted Mint Café are taking part.

“Each shop will provide branded cards and stamps to customers who bring their reusable cups. One cup equals one stamp. The more stamps collected, the greater the chances of winning,” said the city.

They add by collecting stamps, you get a chance to win gift cards from these businesses. To enter the draw, email a picture of your stamped cards to [email protected] by May 3.

Initiative runs from March 29 to April 26.
