Ahead of the high-demand summer season, Courtenay residents are being reminded to follow water restrictions.
The City of Courtenay wants residents to be aware of restrictions and conserve as much water possible over the season to help ensure there isn’t a strain on the water system.
Manager of Utilities Services Rod Armstrong said the seasonal demand can place a real strain on the water system.
“Reducing unnecessary outdoor watering helps protect our water supply, avoids overloading the system, and supports the long-term sustainability.”
Water use in Courtenay often jumps in the summer months with outdoor lawn watering, with 2023 and 2024 having the biggest jumps in summertime water consumption over the past decade.
Increases in water usage can also impact the water utility budget, which has to be forecasted annually for setting budgets and water rates.
Last year saw 287 watering infractions handed out, including 37 repeat offenses, with most infractions related to residential lawn watering.
Courtenay Bylaw Services will be conducting patrols to enforce water restrictions, with an initial notification being handed down for improper use, and a ticket to follow for continued non-compliance.
Summer students will provide door-to-door water conservation and lawn watering tips through neighbourhood visits starting in May.
Everyone is encouraged to adjust their water use and follow the designated watering days to help make a significant difference for the city.
