UPDATE as of 7:30 AM on Sunday, January 21st: A statement from Mount Washington reads that the resort is closed for Sunday, January 21st.
Strathcona Parkway is open, with one lane traffic only at some points. The resort is advising the public to not drive up the mountain.
UPDATE as of 10:26 PM on Saturday, January 20th: RCMP Sergeant Steve Chubey has informed 98.9 The Goat that the logs on the road have been cleared.
Emcon Services has opened the one lane coming down from Mount Washington. The lane going up towards the alpine resort is still closed, until it is cleared by Emcon.
COURTENAY, B.C.- Comox Valley RCMP is asking residents to stay home and avoid driving, if they can.
Heavy snow and rough winter conditions have stalled traffic on the Strathcona Parkway, leading up to and down from Mount Washington.
Speaking with 98.9 The Goat, RCMP Sergeant Steve Chubey said the highway up to Mount Washington is now closed.
He said that no one should attempt to drive down from the mountain, even if their vehicle is equipped with chains or four-wheel drive.
“It’s more than just snow falling,” he said.
Chubey mentioned that trees have fallen, and plows have been unable to access the affected road.
He advised anyone stuck on the mountain contact the Comox Valley RCMP, who will then direct them to Mount Washington and safe lodging.
Officers are being sent on scene, along with flaggers to redirect traffic.
