COURTENAY, B.C.- Contractors working with the City of Courtenay’s Public Works Department will be clearing catch basins across wide areas of the city in both West and East Courtenay next week.
The work will start on Monday, March 5th and last through to the end of April.
The clearing is set to take place on weekdays between 7:30 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. The city said that while crews are working, there may be lane closures. Drivers are advised to drive with caution and obey any traffic personnel on the roadways.
Approx. 1300 catch basins will be cleared of debris, including sludge, dirt, sand, gravel, and other materials that may have deposited over the years.
Keeping the basins cleared can help prevent surface flooding during heavy periods of rain or snow melt.
In a release, the city said that storm drains are only intended to capture storm water. Nothing else should be poured down them, especially motor or cooking oils, paint, or other chemicals.
