COURTENAY, B.C- A growing number of elementary and high schools in the Comox Valley region are participating in ‘Jersey Day’ to show their support for the families and victims of the recent Humbolt tragedy.
A bus carrying Saskatchewan Junior Hockey team, the Humbolt Broncos, collided with a transport truck in Saskatchewan last week, killing 15 and injuring 14 more.
Across the country, Canadians are striving to pay tribute to the team.
One of the many tributes to Humbolt includes ‘Jersey Day’, where Canadians wear a sports jersey on Thursday, April 12th.
Jersey Day was started on Facebook by a group of “hockey families” wanting to show their support.

According to the local school district, at least six schools in the Comox Valley are showing support by taking part in Jersey Day.
Among them is Arden Elementary, whose principal Brian Goodwin is challenging students to wear a jersey for a chance to shoot at a puck at him during lunch hour. For every goal, he will donate $1 to the Humbolt Gofundme.
“I would think that most of the kids will be wearing jerseys for a chance to slap a puck at their principal,” said Goodwin of the event.
The crash hit home for many hockey players and their families.
“My connection with junior hockey, I think that’s what really hit home for me and for a bunch of our parents who have kids in hockey,” said Goodwin.
“I know lots of kids who have gone through the junior ranks and have to ride those busses and I couldn’t imagine how parents are feeling losing their children at such an early age.”
