VANCOUVER ISLAND, B.C. – The North ruled the B.C. High School Senior Girls Island Volleyball Championships at Victoria High School over the weekend.
The AAA tournament had the top teams from the North Island competing against the top teams from the South for the opportunity to proceed to the provincials.
Powell River is hosting the provincials at the end of November.
The top five teams winning teams were all from the North Island zone.
1.) Nanaimo District Secondary School
2.) Carihi Tyees (Campbell River)
3.) Mark R. Isfeld Ice (Courtenay)
4.) Timberline Wolves (Campbell River)
5.) GP Vanier Towhees (Courtenay)
The top three teams are headed directly to the provincial championships.
Going into the tournament, the Tyees were the defending AAA Island titleholders after winning the championships for the first time in more than 50 years in 2017.
They battled to silver this year and in the BC High School Volleyball Nov. 7 rankings, were ranked eighth among AAA squads across the province.
Timberline and GP Vanier still have a shot to compete for the B.C. crown, as they head to the Provincial Wildcard Tournament this weekend in the Lower Mainland for a chance to win a berth to the event.
Five athletes were named to the Island Championship All-Star team, two of whom are local Comox Valley athletes: Sophie Bibault of Mark Isfeld and Gracie Walls of GP Vanier.
They are joined by Campbell River players Emoni Bush of Carihi and Samantha Wright of Timberline.
The Tournament MVP award went to Secondary’s Jayden Saywell of the Island champions, Nanaimo District.
