CUMBERLAND, B.C. – Two cannabis dispensaries are slated to set up shop in Cumberland within the next few months.
Mayor Leslie Baird said that at Monday’s meeting, council chose their top picks for cannabis retail in the village.
At the beginning of October, a request for proposal was issued, and three submissions were received.
Baird said the two retailers selected by council were TRUGreen Solutions, Inc. and Beaufort Botanicals.
She noted that TRUGreen would be located on 3rd Street. Beaufort will set up shop along Dunsmuir Avenue.
“Staff had rated the applications to meet all the guidelines that we had set in motion, and the first two that we picked met all our requirements,” Baird said, explaining that the third proponent did not meet all of the city’s requirements.
She noted that both applications “have some work to do in the buildings they’re going to be housed in.”
Staff will now connect with both operations and ask them to fill out a Temporary Use Permit. Once that’s completed, the permit will be brought back to council for review. Temporary Use Permits last three years, according to Baird.
She said she hopes this will be a benefit to the community.
“It’s two additional businesses on the main street of Cumberland,” she stated.
“Residents had the opportunity to voice their concerns way back when we did the open public process…I think during this whole process, and with the legalization planning, it has been found that some of the fear and concerns haven’t happened at this point. So we’re looking at this all positively.”
