COMOX, B.C. – The Highland Raiders senior boys basketball team earned a hard-fought victory in their last home game of 2018.
The team welcomed Ladysmith on December 18th.
The visitors came out of the gate hot, but their eight-point lead evaporated after Highland’s six-foot-three forward Will Derksen put the team on the board with a clean two-pointer.
David Ng and Adam Torry followed suit with two-balls of their own. Sophomore Josh Taylor drilled two three-pointers before knocking down a two-pointer before the end of the first quarter.
The teams went back and forth throughout the game before Highland closed it out in the fourth, adding 16 points to their total with the help of Renzo Martinez, who nailed a deep three.
Final score was 54-51 for Highland. Team captain Luke Yeo scored 17 points. Yeo is currently the third highest scorer on the North Island at the high school level.
Josh Taylor finished with 15, and Adam Torry scored 12. Will Derksen finished the game with 8.
Former Highland Raiders player and current head coach, Gavin Hughes, said he was proud of his team.
“They played an excellent game together and pulled through for a well-deserved win at home”, he noted.
The Raiders play in the AA league, and have their next home game on January 15th at 7:00 p.m. in Highland’s gym against Campbell River’s Timberline Secondary.
