COURTENAY B.C – The Comox Valley Regional District voted in favour of banning single-use plastic bags last night at the Committee of the Whole Meeting.
On March 12, 2019, the board received a delegation from Helen Boyd and Meghan Leahy of the Comox Valley Nurses for Health and the Environment.
The presentation suggested that the Comox Valley Regional District look to ban single-use plastic bags.
Th District does not have the authority to regulate the use of single-use plastic bags in the CVRD member municipalities, so the request also asked the board to pursue the Province of British Columbia to support programs and measures aligned with banning single-use plastics.
At the Committee of the Whole meeting Tuesday night the CVRD had had three courses of action on the suggested issue, and they were as follows:
– That the Comox Valley Regional District Board encourages its member municipalities and all businesses within the region to restrict the use of single-use plastic bags.
– That the Comox Valley Regional District write to the Province of British Columbia to request province-wide business regulations to reduce single-use plastic bags and disposable plastic packaging.
– That the matter of restricting single-use plastic bags be referred to the Comox Strathcona Waste Management Board for consideration of further action.
The three actions were voted on, and passed by members of the board.
The actions will be further ratified at the April 30th CVRD meeting.
