COURTENAY, B.C -Changes could be coming to Courtenay’s garbage and recycling collection schedule this year.
At the May 6th council meeting, a motion was put forward by Councillor David Frisch that staff provide Council with a report on options and implications of changing the city’s garbage pickup to a biweekly schedule, and the recycling pickup to a weekly schedule.
Councillor Frisch says the change to the current schedule is something the city has been wanting to do for a while, but they need to look at the pros and cons, which the report can provide.
“It’s important that we get the report because we don’t actually know what kind of effect it would have if we change garbage pickup,” said Frisch.
“There are lots of benefits we see. Encouraging people to buy products that have recyclable components instead of waste garbage components to them, and seeing if a change of schedule might improve that.”
“We also have some concerns about people that are not composting their organics but instead putting them in their garbage can, what does that mean for them?”
Frisch added that the report is a good first step in managing the city’s waste stream.
“Our waste stream needs to be managed better, and I think this is one small way we might look into changing peoples behaviour in regards to garbage.”
The motion to receive the report passed unanimously.
