CAMPBELL RIVER, BC – The provincial government is doling out funding to several local governments and First Nations communities.
The grants are part of the Community Resiliency Investment program and are designed to support wildfire risk reduction projects.
This round of grants is for projects within the Coastal Fire Centre.
These grants are part of the second round of 44 grants distributed province-wide. They are also in addition to the more than $6 million in funding provided to 85 municipalities, regional districts and First Nations throughout the province in May 2019.
The Wei Wai Kum First Nation will be receiving $25,000 to assist with education and planning.
“The last two summers have shown the need for better preparation in advance of wildfire seasons,” Minister of Forests, Lands, Natural Resource Operations and Rural Development Doug Donaldson said.
“To help keep people and communities as safe as possible, it’s more important than ever that we invest in programs that reduce the risk.”
The Community Resiliency Investment program helps increase community resiliency by funding activities that promote FireSmart education, as well as planning and opportunities for partnerships through FireSmart committees.
Grant applications are processed by the Union of BC Municipalities. The application deadline for the next intake is October 18th. For more information on program materials and applications, visit the UBCM website.
