With the recent headlines and road trip season in full swing – we all need to do what we can to be as safe as we can.
Here are 5 things to think about before your trip:
Plan your route! Once you know how you’re getting there, make sure you’re stopping at well lit gas stations and rest stops. It’s a good idea to try to limit these stops to daylight hours as well so you’re not filling up gas at night.
Staying in secure campgrounds as opposed to taking a snooze on the side of the road. In an official campground, there’s better chance of service and employees/park rangers being around to help should a situation arise. Plus, bathroom bonus! Score!
Being observant on the roads – especially if on a planned road trip. Take note of the cars around you or people that may stick out. It’s recommended to take notes if you notice or feel something is not right. Write the thought out as soon as you can so it’s documented and you have an exact recall of what the description/situation is, should you need to refer back to it.
Dash cam! Not only is this good for travelling on highways, but could help with the safety of your vehicle overnight as well. There are some that have motion activated sensors, which could help with overnight camping as well.
And of course, checking in with friends and family. A text, email, call, anything to let them know your current whereabouts and your plan for the next 24 hours. Update as you go to avoid confusion and false alarms.
These are more common sense than anything, there are so many more ways to prepare – from making sure the cars in top shape, to what to pack and the best routes.
Do your research before you hit the road for the best trip possible! Safe travels!
