Plans are moving forward in the construction of a 6th Street pedestrian and cycling bridge in Courtenay!
City council’s endorsed a resolution by Councilor Doug Hillian to support the project in principle, which is being put up by the 6th Street Bridge Committee.
But Courtenay mayor Larry Jangula says there’s good and bad to this proposal.
Jangula says the bridge would be built through grants and fundraising, and not through taxpayer dollars.
He adds it’s a matter of waiting to see how much the committee raises and that council isn’t putting any money forward on this for the time being. Â The project is estimated to cost around $1.9-million.
The 6th Street Bridge Committee originally proposed a timber-framed bridge linking downtown with Simms Park, but the new plan would see the construction of a cable bridge with a wood deck.
