Comox standing in solidarity with First Nations peoples this week

Many communities have organized events and tributes for the 215 indigenous children found at the former Kamloops residential school, and Comox is joining them.

This Wednesday, council members and other staff will be taking part in an impromptu orange shirt day in support of the families and Indigenous members impacted by the recent discovery.

The flags at Town Hall, including the K’ómoks FirstNation flag, will also remain half-masted for nine days, or 215 hours, in recognition of the lives of those children, the survivors, and their families.

“The town felt it was important to show solidarity and support with Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc First Nation and Indigenous communities locally, across the province and Canada, as we mourn the loss of those lives,” explained Mayor Russ Arnott.
