The sixth WeCan Shelter home is officially open.
The grand opening was held Saturday at the Maple Pool Campground.
The shipping container unit was built thanks to volunteers and local donor, Marianne Muir, who contributed $20,000 after selling some property.
“I thought I would like to help out locally,” said Muir. “I had some extra money. I’m happy to help. It’s very cool.”
The WeCan Shelter Society was formed to provide these homes at the campground to people in need for a low monthly rent payment.
“This has changed people’s lives,” said WeCan Shelter Society chairperson Charlene Davis. “Change starts with one person at a time.”
The units have taken approximately four months to build.
The Mayor’s Golf Charity Classic tournament will be covering the cost of the seventh shipping container home.
Tournament committee members Bill Kelly and Matt Beckett gave Davis a cheque for $25,000 for the new unit on Saturday.
“I’m overjoyed,” said Davis. “I don’t have to worry about the money.”
“The WeCan Shelter project is very important in the Comox Valley,” said Kelly. “This was a great opportunity to support a great cause. We’re extremely excited to support this cause.”
