A busy week for fire crews in the Comox Valley.
This morning (Friday), the Courtenay Fire Department was called to a blaze at Maple Pool Campsite, just as it was ravaging a fifth-wheel trailer.
Fire chief Kurt MacDonald says he arrived on scene shortly before 8 am to find heavy smoke spewing out its back end.
“The lone occupant was trying to control the fire with a garden hose,” MacDonald tells My Comox Valley Now.
“We were able to keep the fire held at bay for the first little bit with the garden hose, and then we just closed it all up to try and choke it from oxygen.”
According to MacDonald, crews were able to contain the damage, knocking the flames down to stop any spread to nearby homes. As well, he says no injuries were reported.
“The individual got out safely,” MacDonald says. “He woke up and found the fire in his trailer. It was very fortunate that he got out, because in most cases with trailers, there’s only one way in and one way out.”
But today’s fire came following a more challenging call less than 48 hours prior.
This past Wednesday (Nov. 10) just before noon, MacDonald says a modular single-wide trailer on Cumberland Rd. caught ablaze.
“A gentleman woke up and his living room was on fire. He got out without injuries, but it was a significant fire,” he adds. “It got a car going and lit a tree on fire.”
