The Comox Valley Regional District is encouraging its residents to register for emergency notifications in support of emergency preparedness week.
With the week running from May 1 to 7 of this year, the district is encouraging registration for the “Get Notified” Connect Rocket System. They add the system is a free, subscription-based service that allows local governments to distribute local emergency alerts.
The district says the provincial Alert Ready service has not been adjusted by the province to be used by local governments. It is only used for tsunami push notifications to mobile devices.
The registration process can be done at the CVRD website. They ask residents to sign up for notifications in the areas where they live.
Areas include:
- Baynes Sound (Electoral Area A)
- City of Courtenay
- Denman/Hornby Islands (Electoral Area A)
- K’ómoks First Nation
- Lazo North (Electoral Area B)
- Puntledge – Black Creek (Electoral Area C)
- Town of Comox
- Village of Cumberland
Residents who do not have access to a computer and want notifications with a landline or cell phone can register by calling 250-334-6000.
Current and new registrants will be entered to win one of five emergency preparedness kits, according to the district
