Starting today, Comox Strathcona Waste Management (CSWM) will be delivering new kitchen bins to eligible homes in Comox Valley and Campbell River.
The bins will collect food waste from people’s kitchens, which then goes to a larger bin mixed with yard waste that would be placed on the curb for collection day.
This helps reduce pressure on landfill, as well as the creation of harmful greenhouse gases.
This comes at a time when the waste management service is growing its food and yard waste program, and it will get organic materials thanks to a partnership with the City of Campbell River, City of Courtenay, Town of Comox and Village of Cumberland.
Courtenay, Comox, and Cumberland residents should be able to get a kitchen bin by February 17th of this year, with those living on Campbell River will be introduced to the program by the spring.
Comox Strathcona Waste Management Co-Chair Will Cole-Hamilton says that food and yard waste make up a significant portion of what’s sent to the landfill.
“Food and yard waste, organics, make up about 30 percent of what our region sends to the landfill,” said Hamilton.
“It can be better managed by composting, and the CSWM is committed to expanding our organics program to improve our sustainability in waste management.”
