The City of Courtenay says councillor David Frisch is on mandatory leave following an assault charge.
According to the BC Supreme Court, Frisch has been accused of assault from an offence at the beginning of January. Two court appearances followed towards the end of the month, with two more scheduled for early and mid-February.
The city adds Frisch’s leave of absence is in the requirements for sections 109.1 through 109.3 of the community charter.
According to the BC Government, the leave of absence starts on the date of the charge and will end if the councillor is acquitted of the offence, convicted of the offence, discharged, if proceedings are stayed or if the charge is withdrawn.
The council member still holds their position, but cannot carry out a duty.
The city says the matter is before the courts and will not provide any further comments until it has concluded.
