Comox Valley residents can get their household items repaired without a charge through the upcoming Cumberland Repair Cafe.
Hosted by Cumberland Community Schools Society (CCSS), and in partnership with Comox Strathcona Waste Management, the cafe aims to provide an alternative for household items meant to be used for landfill, by repairing and reusing them.
CCSS Program Coordinator, Kate Ashton says they are excited to help Comox Strathcona Waste Management in their goal of bringing repair cafes to the community a couple of times a year.
Ashton says, “[We hope to have] the community become accustomed to holding on to their broken items and attending Repair Cafes, rather than throwing these items out.”
An educator from Waste Management, Lindsay Eason says that learning how to repair someone’s own stuff can build lifelong skills that save money and reduce waste.
“Repairing items is an essential part of keeping products in use, rather than immediately recycling them or throwing them out when something goes wrong,” says Eason.
The Cafe is scheduled for April 29th at the Cumberland Community School from 11 am to 3 pm.
