A soccer club in the Comox Valley is getting a helping hand with safety, through a new defibrillator from the Comox Firefighters Association.
The Comox Valley Master Soccer Club got it’s third defibrillator through partnering with the association, with the plan to have them on hand for the club’s games and practices.
The donation comes following studies showing 30 to 50 per cent of sudden cardiac arrest victims would likely survive if CPR and defibrillators were used within five minutes of collapse.
Fire Chief Gord Schreiner says it’s great to see local groups help them make these defibrillators more available to the community.
“Our goal is to have public access AEDs everywhere,” says Schreiner. “To date, our firefighters have supported the placement of over sixty AEDs at the cost of approximately $80,000.00.”
The association adds that a single defibrillator costs $2,000, with half of the money being donated by local businesses. CPR and defibrillator training are also available for residents, according to the association.
