With today being Canada Day, you are reminded to think responsibly while celebrating by the Coastal Fire Centre (CFC).
This reminder comes as the Merville and Black Creek Areas are in extreme fire status, with fireworks prohibited as part of the ongoing fire ban on Vancouver Island.
CFC Information Officer Gordon Robinson encourages residents to think about their responsibilities to both the community and province.
“We’re in a pretty good situation for fires right now, but with the conditions we have right now, there’s a potential for fire to spread really quickly if it gets started,” says Robinson.
“So I encourage everyone to be really careful, every human-caused fire is a preventable fire, and every preventable fire we’ve got on the island and coast now is going to take up resources that we can’t use to support other harder hit areas.”
If you are within a municipality or fire department’s jurisdiction, Robinson recommends you give the department a call, in case fireworks are being heard or seen while the ban is in effect.
If you are away from these areas, including BC Wildfire, you are encouraged to call the Report All Poachers and Polluters Line at 1-877-952-7277.
