A series of small fires started in Courtenay during the weekend.
Firefighters with the Courtenay Fire Department responded to a brush fire on Muir Road, a garbage container fire on the same road, and a beach brush fire on Veterans Memorial Parkway early Saturday afternoon.
According to deputy chief George Seigler, all three fires came within the span of an hour.
He says they would send a total of 14 firefighters in the event of a brush fire, with one of the fires taking a while to put out.
“So the one we had on Veterans Memorial Parkway, we had crews on scene for eight or nine hours, and it was a lot bigger,” said Seigler.
“Sometimes they’re quick to extinguish it, but the mop up and overhaul that goes into the fires after takes a considerable amount of time.”
No injuries have been reported to the department from the fires, which were all put out.
Seigler adds that the situation is being investigated.
“When you have three fires within an hour, all in the same area, it certainly points to being suspicious,” said Seigler. “RCMP are investigating.”
He encourages you to call 9-1-1 if you see a fire or call RCMP if you see someone lighting a fire.
