Arzeena Hamir named Courtenay-Comox candidate for B.C. Greens

The B.C. Green Party is announcing its new candidate for the Courtenay-Comox area, with Arzeena Hamir to take the spot.

Party leader Sonia Furstenau says they are excited to have Hamir as candidate, and are looking forward to working with her.

“Arzeena has been a dedicated community leader for decades, and her passion for positive change is evident in her extensive contributions as an organic farmer as well as her work with Young Agrarians, Comox Valley Community Health Network and many more community boards,” said Furstenau.

Hamir adds she has roots in the Comox Valley as owner and organic farmer of Amara Farm, and her career includes a Master’s degree in sustainable agriculture from the University of London.

Combined with sitting on the CVRD Board as Area B director for four years, she says her top priorities include water conservation, helping farmers and improving affordability.

“I have expertise in the farming and water infrastructure side of things. With the drought, we need more and more farmers to hold water on their farms so that they aren’t impacting the local rivers and the fish in the rivers,” said Hamir.

“Supporting farmers through funding and policy supports so they are able to put ponds and dugouts on their properties, hold that water and still be able to irrigate and water their animals, those types of policies are something that we can advocate for.”

Hamir adds she will be listening to local citizens, doctors and nurses to help create local solutions to healthcare issues.

She says her vision is to see a vibrant Comox Valley where people can have access to housing, food and healthcare and is excited to be representing the community.
