Comox Valley, Campbell River bus drivers issue strike notice

Members of Unifor Local 114 including bus drivers, mechanics and cleaners may go on strike soon.

According to a statement from Unifor, the union issued a 72-hour strike notice to PWTransit Monday night after workers voted to reject a tentative agreement. The strike deadline is 2 p.m. Thursday.

PWTransit is contracted by BC Transit to provide services in Campbell River and the Comox Valley and work as transit operators, handy dart operators, mechanics and cleaners.

Workers were set to vote on the tentative agreement last weekend. Wages are at the core of the dispute, and the union has been asking for wages to be increased so they are on par with services in similar-sized B.C. communities.

Both regions have been plagued by a driver shortage this year, the company says it has been actively hiring but the union says the wage gap with other communities has made recruitment difficult.

Following the strike notice, BC Transit says service will cease in Campbell River and the Comox Valley starting on Friday.
However, handy dart has been deemed essential for customers with medical needs and will continue to operate. All other customers will be notified of cancellations.
BC Transit adds they will be monitoring the situation closely as the issue is between PWTransit and unionized employees. They will provide an update as more information is available.
