Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North to continue helping families in 2024

As 2023 comes to a close, Habitat for Humanity Vancouver Island North looks to continue helping those in need.

The organization, which was founded in 2004, focuses on building affordable and safe homes for families on North Vancouver Island.

Stefano Tromba, Director of communications and fundraising for habitat says the main focus for this year was building 12 homes at 1375 Piercy Avenue in Courtenay.

“Our main mission is to build homes and to get 12 homes built in that timeframe and get all 12 families in before christmas is really the main goal,” said Tromba.

“That was one of the proudest moments we’ve had, because it’s a huge achievement to have that many homes built in that time period.”

He says along with the building, there were some fundraising events, such as the haunting on hilchey in Campbell River, which raised less than $4000 in two days.

Another fundraiser is the holiday campaign, which as of Wednesday, raised over $10,000.

With the housing crisis still affecting many families, Tromba says that they are trying to work with local municipalities in the hopes of streamlining the process of making homes.

For the new year, he adds that there will be a key ceremony welcoming five families into their new homes, with mayor Bob Wells and parliament member Gord Johns set to appear at the ceremony.

It’s taking place at Pierce Avenue on January 18, starting at 4:00 p.m.
